Lycée Jean Baptiste Dumas

Description

The “JBD” high school, as it is called by all the inhabitants of Alés, is an institution in the region.

Built at the end of the 19th century, it was inaugurated in October 1889 on its original site in the town centre (the current location of our cultural partner, the Cratère theatre).

Relocated in the 1960s to the banks of the Gardon river, its surface area increased from 2 to 9 hectares and its educational offer diversified (technical and general education).

With the construction of the Jacques Prévert high school in Saint-Christol les Alès in 2009, the Jean-Baptiste Dumas high school saw its number of students diminish and regained a more “human” dimension. It currently houses just over 2,000 pupils and students.

Between now and the start of the school year in 2025, JBD will be undergoing another “new look”. A large-scale restructuring planned by the Occitanie Region will take over a number of buildings to provide exceptional premises and working conditions for both students and staff. 60 million euros are being spent on the project, which is one and a half times the cost of building a new high school.

Today, Jean-Baptiste Dumas is a high school for everyone: it welcomes students from the 3rd year of pre-prep trades to the CPGE TSI (preparatory classes for the grandes écoles), as well as 6 CAPs (vocational training certificates), 10 vocational baccalaureates, two technological baccalaureates (ST2S and STI2D) and the general baccalaureate.

It is home to the CFA and GRETA du Gard as well as the PFT 3D INNOV du Gard.

5 BTS complete the training offer as well as a professional licence CAPPI (industry of the future) planned for September 2021 at bac +3 level in partnership with the CNAM and the Alès-Myriapolis development agency.

JBD is not a large high school because it is the size of a campus, but because it offers pupils and students from Alès and its surroundings an inexhaustible range of training courses and the opportunity to build a life as an enlightened citizen with a successful career path.

JBD is proud to be a place of academic ambition in a calm atmosphere where it is good to live together, to learn to know each other, to respect and appreciate one’s differences in order to enter the adult world without apprehension or preconceptions.
